Mortal Portals:
“I’ve called the exhibition ‘Mortal Portals®’, simply because they are Human Windows. It’s about looking within, into their world”. Kerry says.
Kerry’s introduction to clay sculpture came whilst attending a workshop by acclaimed sculptor Janna Pameijer, Maleny artist. Janna has been coming to Goondiwindi for many years giving these specialist workshops with the Nungwai Art Group, which Kerry attended.
Kerry uses a coarse raku clay. Sculptures are created in a unique and contemporary style. While some are left natural others are hand painted and coloured with a variety of finishes which add to their unique design.
Though Kerry has been painting for some years, her exhibition "Mortal Portals®" has given her an opportunity to introduce both expressions, extending her painting theme into the ‘mortal portals’ series. Her paintings are worked with acrylics and mixed media. Image Left:Aileen Norman at Kerry's recent exhibition.
in 2007 Kerry indulged in 6 weeks of art workshops throughout Greece & Italy with International Artist Michael Winters - Canberra and sculptor Janna Pameijer - Maleny.
Then again in 2010 Kerry attended The Michael Winters Art Study Tour of Greece. Kerry said, ”I was totally immersed in art, I was creating artworks most days, and absorbing my surroundings the other days. It was just so amazing and inspirational to be around such incredibly talented tutors as well as her friend and art mentor Val Fitzpatrick from Canberra and other artists, such as Michelle Norman and Bronwyn Fife.”
"To be around all this artistic stimuli for six weeks straight not once but twice, and with no other outside distractions was enough to create a continual flow of creative ideas and artistic direction. When I returned home to Australia, the need to create a collection of artwork for my first solo exhibition was thus destined."
“I feel the ‘Mortal Portal®’ series can evolve in so many ways and look forward to the challenge .As I’m more settled in my own individual quirky style” Pictured Left: Recently at "Nungwai" Sculpture workshop.
Janna Says:
Her fearless approach to ambitious designs displayed her inner confidence. Failure is not a word in her vocab. The theme of Mortal Portals, came from a set of portraits Kerry made for her children. " It's taken hold!" And in true Kerry style these unique pieces here have been produced with penache and great style. They are her response to an aspect of the life and people around her. Kerry's sense of humour, fun and joy is apparent in these works. I am very excited about her bold direction. With her enthusiasm...and passion, her art makes her a woman to watch out for!"
